Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, pushed back Monday against President Trump repeatedly calling him a “communist.”
In an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, Mamdani responded directly: “No. I’m a democratic socialist. I’ve said that time and again.” He argued Trump deliberately avoids the accurate label because “the message of my politics is one that is connecting with New Yorkers across the five boroughs.”
Mamdani, who holds a strong lead in recent polling, said Trump’s attacks reflect “stages of grief” as he comes to terms with the likelihood of a democratic socialist becoming mayor of his hometown. He also accused Trump of backing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo as an alternative candidate.
Earlier Monday, Trump repeated his criticism on Truth Social, warning Mamdani would “have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great city.” Trump added: “Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his fake communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it.”
