Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem suggested on Monday that President Donald Trump should consider implementing a comprehensive travel ban on certain countries that she believes are contributing to issues in the United States. The specific countries that might be included in such a ban were not immediately specified, and Trump shared Noem’s statement on Truth Social without additional comments.
In her statement, Noem emphasized the importance of America’s founding principles, asserting that the country was built on hard work and the pursuit of freedom, rather than accommodating individuals she characterized as threats or burdens. Her comments were made in the context of a recent shooting incident involving two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., allegedly perpetrated by an Afghan national who had previously assisted U.S. forces during the Afghanistan War.
Earlier, Trump had called for a “permanent pause” on migration from lower-income countries and referenced the concept of “reverse migration.” Following the shooting, Joseph Edlow, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, announced a suspension of the asylum process for migrants in the U.S. and initiated a review of green card statuses for individuals from various countries, especially in the Middle East, while placing a ban on Afghans entering the country.
Noem commented on the Afghan national in the shooting, suggesting that he may have become radicalized during his time in the U.S., and indicated that investigations would continue to explore his connections and interactions within his community.
