Sacramento, California — California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Democratic criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has become “almost universal,” arguing that opposition within the party is focused primarily on Netanyahu’s government rather than Israel itself.
Speaking with PBS News, Newsom said Democrats are “overwhelmingly opposed” to the current Israeli government and cited West Bank settler violence and Netanyahu’s rejection of a Palestinian state as major reasons for the shift.
“We want a democratic and secure Israel, and we want a secure democratic Palestinian state as well,” Newsom said. He added that even for those who reject the term genocide, the conduct of the war in Gaza has been a “moral catastrophe.”
Public opinion data supports a substantial Democratic shift, although Newsom’s “almost universal” characterization is broader than polling can firmly establish. Recent AP-NORC surveys have found that roughly half of Democrats believe Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, while other polling cited by The Hill found 58% saying the United States supports Israel too much.
Newsom also said Democratic opposition to accepting money from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee has grown, describing recipients as a minority within the party. He confirmed earlier this year that he has never accepted AIPAC money and does not intend to do so.
His comments reflect a broader change in Democratic politics, where support for Israel as a country increasingly coexists with sharp criticism of Netanyahu, settlement expansion and the Gaza war. Recent U.S. criticism has also extended to Israeli settler violence in the West Bank, which U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee recently called terrorism.
