California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has formally requested nearly $40 billion in federal funding to help rebuild communities devastated by wildfires in Los Angeles, particularly in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods.
In a letter to congressional leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Newsom emphasized the state’s inability to recover alone. “Make no mistake, Los Angeles will use this money wisely,” he wrote, pledging that funds would go toward individuals, businesses, and property owners affected by the fires.
Rather than relying solely on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Newsom proposed pulling relief funding from multiple agencies, including the Small Business Administration and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He also highlighted the need for aid to rebuild healthcare facilities, noting that fires forced the evacuation of 160 facilities, displacing over 2,600 individuals.
The request follows the removal of Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley amid scrutiny over wildfire response efforts.
