Nebraska lawmakers advanced a bill Tuesday that would require public schools to notify parents about the books their children check out from school libraries, if parents opt in for updates.

The legislation, which passed 25-2 in the state’s unicameral Legislature, would also mandate that schools maintain online databases listing all books in their libraries. The bill must pass another round of debate before reaching Republican Gov. Jim Pillen’s desk.

State Sen. Dave Murman, who sponsored the bill, said it aims to help parents ensure reading materials align with their values. The proposal comes amid conservative efforts to scrutinize school library content, particularly books discussing gender identity and sexuality.

A PEN America report recorded 10,046 book bans in U.S. public schools last year, with more than half targeting “sex-related themes or depictions.” The group warns that efforts to restrict student access to literature are growing nationwide.
