NASA has backed away from a plan to host the National Climate Assessment on its website, reversing an earlier commitment made after the Donald Trump administration scrubbed the original source, globalchange.gov. The assessment is a congressionally mandated report on climate science and its impacts on the United States.
NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens told The Hill this week that “NASA has no legal obligations to host globalchange.gov’s data,” noting that the U.S. Global Change Research Program fulfilled its duty by delivering the reports to Congress. This statement reverses NASA’s previous promise to ensure continuity of access by archiving reports on its site.
The change comes amid broader moves from agencies under Trump to question or downplay climate science. The EPA, for instance, has signaled intent to reevaluate its finding that climate change poses a public threat and dismissed scientists slated to contribute to future climate assessments.
Although the 2023 report remains accessible via government archives and the Wayback Machine, the latest developments have raised concerns among environmental advocates about long-term access and transparency in climate data.
