Elon Musk publicly criticized top Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro early Saturday, mocking his academic background and business experience as markets reel from the administration’s sweeping tariff policy.

Musk, who lost nearly $18 billion in Tesla stock value during the week’s market plunge, responded on X to a user defending Navarro’s Harvard economics Ph.D. “A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing,” Musk wrote. When another user praised Navarro’s trade stance, Musk shot back, “He ain’t built s–t.”

Navarro has appeared frequently on TV defending Trump’s tariff program, which the administration claims could bring in $600 billion annually. Trump has called the tariffs an “economic revolution,” arguing businesses will benefit in the long term through pending tax cuts.

The White House did not respond to Musk’s comments. Other top Trump officials, including Council of Economic Advisers chair Stephen Miran, also hold Harvard Ph.D.s.

Trump suggested Thursday that Musk may take a step back from advising the administration as the Department of Government Efficiency nears its budget-cutting goals.
