Elon Musk clarified Friday that two $1 million payments he announced for Wisconsin voters will go to “spokesmen” for an online petition opposing “activist” judges — not as a reward for voting, as originally posted. The clarification came after Musk deleted a Thursday post stating he would “personally hand over” the checks to voters who had cast ballots in Tuesday’s state Supreme Court election.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said Friday he would seek a court order to stop the payments, calling them a potential felony under state election bribery laws. Musk’s political action committee also offered $100 to registered voters who signed or shared the petition.

Musk’s PAC confirmed one $1 million recipient: Green Bay resident Scott Ainsworth, a Schimel supporter and donor. Meanwhile, critics argue the campaign’s financial incentives may violate Wisconsin law prohibiting offers of value in exchange for voting.

Tuesday’s high-stakes race pits Republican Brad Schimel against Democrat Susan Crawford. The winner will tip the ideological balance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
