Mesa, Arizona’s Republican Mayor John Giles, who recently endorsed Vice President Harris for the 2024 presidential race, expressed concerns on Monday that former President Trump might not leave office if reelected. In an interview with CNN’s Laura Coates, Giles responded to Trump’s recent comments suggesting Christians wouldn’t need to vote after November, saying, “No, I don’t [believe Trump would leave office].”
Giles explained that he initially thought it hyperbolic to suggest Trump’s reelection could mark the end of free elections but reconsidered after Trump’s remarks about ending the need for future elections. Trump made these comments at the Turning Point Action’s “Believers Summit” in Florida, which has drawn backlash and speculation about his intentions regarding future elections.
Former President Biden’s communications director, Kate Bedingfield, argued on X that Trump’s comments might simply indicate he wouldn’t run again, highlighting the problematic devotion the GOP has shown towards Trump. In a Fox News interview with Laura Ingraham, Trump assured he would leave office after four years, referencing his departure in 2021.
Giles, in an op-ed for The Arizona Republic, criticized the Republican Party’s trajectory under Trump, citing its political extremism and departure from fundamental freedoms as reasons for his support of Harris.
