North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles Tuesday morning, marking its second missile test this year, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported. The missiles, launched from Chagang Province’s Kanggye area at around 9:30 a.m. local time, traveled approximately 155 miles before landing in the Sea of Japan.
The test follows a January 6 launch during Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Seoul. South Korean officials strongly condemned the act, labeling it a provocation that threatens peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The launch occurs amid South Korea’s political instability after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s martial law declaration in December and subsequent impeachment. Analysts warn North Korea could exploit the situation.
South Korea’s military, in coordination with U.S. forces, remains on high alert to prevent miscalculations and respond to provocations effectively.
