Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent candidate, has challenged former President Trump to a debate at the upcoming Libertarian Party convention. Kennedy, who once considered joining the Libertarian Party after a failed Democratic primary bid, sees the convention as an ideal platform for a debate.
In a recent post, Kennedy wrote, “We’re both going to be speaking at the upcoming Libertarian convention on May 24 and 25. It’s perfect neutral territory for you and me to have a debate where you can defend your record for your wavering supporters.” He reminded Trump of his previous willingness to debate, given Kennedy’s strong poll numbers.
Kennedy cited Zogby data, showing him leading Trump in a two-candidate race, excluding President Biden. He proposed, “So let’s meet in a couple of weeks and show the American public that at least two of the major candidates aren’t afraid to debate each other.”
Kennedy has been urging both Trump and Biden to debate him, aiming to elevate his status and compete with the mainstream nominees. However, both parties remain skeptical about a potential debate involving Kennedy, given Trump’s reluctance to debate this cycle and Biden’s similar stance.
The Libertarian event could potentially equalize the field for Kennedy and Trump, appealing to voters who defy traditional party and ideological lines. Despite discussions with Libertarian officials about a third-party bid, Kennedy remains committed to his independent campaign, aiming to appear on all 50 state ballots. His campaign has achieved this in 10 states so far, with more expected as deadlines approach.
