Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, is on trial for federal firearms charges in Wilmington, Delaware, four days after former President Donald Trump’s conviction in a hush money case. Jury selection began Monday morning for Biden, who is charged with three federal gun offenses related to a weapon he purchased in 2018 while addicted to drugs. His memoir, Beautiful Things: A Memoir, where he discusses his addiction and the firearm purchase, is expected to be used by prosecutors.
First Lady Jill Biden attended the trial in support of her son. Hunter Biden is accused of lying on a firearms form by stating he was not addicted to drugs. Prosecutors claim his own admissions in his book provide critical evidence against him. Despite attempts to avoid the trial, including a failed plea deal last year, Biden now faces a potential 25-year sentence if convicted on all counts.
In response to the charges, Biden has acknowledged his past mistakes, stating, “I have made mistakes in my life, and wasted opportunities and privileges I was afforded. For that, I am responsible. For that, I am accountable. And for that, I am making amends.” He has pleaded not guilty, maintaining that the charges are politically motivated.
