A federal judge has ordered Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to turn over documents and answer questions about their role in restructuring federal agencies. The order, issued Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, gives Musk and DOGE three weeks to comply.
The ruling mandates the release of records detailing federal layoffs, contract cancellations, and agency reductions but does not extend to President Donald Trump, who established DOGE via executive order on January 20.
Musk and DOGE have faced nearly two dozen lawsuits since Trump’s second term began, including a challenge from 14 Democratic state attorneys general arguing that Musk’s role lacks constitutional authority.
In a separate case, District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled Monday that DOGE must release records under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, citing “unusual secrecy” in its operations.
The Justice Department defended DOGE, calling its efforts historic cost-saving measures against government waste.
