WASHINGTON, D.C. Federal gun enforcement rhetoric intensified this week as U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro warned that anyone bringing a firearm into the nation’s capital should expect to go to jail, regardless of permits issued elsewhere. Pirro, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, made the comments during a Fox News appearance, signaling a sharp shift in tone from a party that has traditionally framed itself as the strongest defender of expansive Second Amendment rights.
“You bring a gun into this district, count on going to jail,” Pirro said, adding that she does not care whether the person is licensed or considered law-abiding in another jurisdiction. Her remarks come as Republican officials face renewed scrutiny following the fatal shooting of Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents. Pretti was reportedly carrying a legally licensed firearm at the time of his death, a fact that has complicated conservative messaging around gun rights and law enforcement authority.
Washington, D.C. maintains some of the strictest gun regulations in the country. All firearms must be registered with local police, and the city effectively bans civilian ownership of AR-15-style rifles. Despite this, Pirro’s office previously directed federal prosecutors not to pursue felony charges in certain rifle and shotgun cases, even as local policy barred most individuals from carrying such weapons.
The Justice Department has since sued the District, arguing that its assault-style weapon ban is unconstitutional. Meanwhile, several Republican lawmakers and gun-rights groups, including the NRA, have pushed back against Pirro’s warning, emphasizing that lawful gun ownership should not vanish at city limits.
