Washington, D.C. — U.S. intelligence officials say Iran’s leadership remains unsettled as Mojtaba Khamenei, the country’s new supreme leader, continues helping shape wartime strategy and negotiations with Washington.

According to intelligence assessments cited by KRDO, Khamenei is “playing a crucial role” in directing Iran’s response while remaining largely out of public view. Officials say he is isolated while receiving medical treatment for severe injuries and avoids electronic communication, relying instead on couriers. That has made it difficult for U.S. officials to visually confirm his location or determine the full extent of his authority.

The assessment comes as the United States weighs Iran’s military and economic position. Intelligence reports indicate that about two-thirds of Iran’s missile launchers survived recent strikes. Tehran also may be able to withstand the U.S. blockade for roughly four more months without total economic destabilization.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that Iran’s political system remains “fragmented,” complicating efforts to determine who can make binding decisions in negotiations.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly held a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Khamenei earlier this week, the first known in-person contact since Khamenei’s injuries. Officials expect updated images within one to two months.
