In the first week of President Donald Trump’s return to office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out nationwide raids, resulting in approximately 1,300 arrests by Thursday, with an additional 956 arrests reported on Sunday. These operations targeted individuals deemed public safety threats, including sex offenders, convicted murderers, and members of the Tren de Aragua gang.

Key locations included Chicago, where top Trump administration officials, including “border czar” Tom Homan, observed the enforcement efforts. In Denver, 49 individuals were detained in a raid linked to a DEA drug trafficking investigation, with at least 41 found to be in the U.S. illegally. Similar operations occurred in Austin, Texas; Paterson, New Jersey; San Jose, California; and Los Angeles, among other cities.

Local officials, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, expressed concerns over the raids, pledging to protect immigrant communities. Protesters in Austin and other cities criticized the operations, alleging racial profiling. ICE emphasized its focus on violent criminals, while critics argued the raids risked targeting non-violent individuals.
