Tensions in the House escalated Wednesday after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) led a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist fatally shot at Utah Valley University earlier in the day.
Following the observance, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) requested a prayer be read, sparking Democrats to shout “no.” The exchange quickly unraveled as Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) yelled across the chamber, “You f***ing own this,” drawing Democratic retorts that pointed to a Colorado school shooting that occurred just hours earlier. “Pass some gun laws,” one Democrat responded.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) echoed Luna’s stance in comments to reporters, saying, “Democrats own what happened today.” Meanwhile, Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) introduced a resolution initially condemning the attack on Kirk but later revised it to describe the shooting as an “assassination,” calling Kirk a “faith-based conservative spokesman and thought leader.” Several Republicans signed on to the measure.
Before Kirk’s death was confirmed, Johnson denounced political violence, stating, “We can settle disagreements and disputes in a civil manner, and political violence must be called out, and it has to stop.” Kirk, 31, co-founded Turning Point USA and was a key supporter of Donald Trump, mobilizing young conservatives nationwide.
