New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the termination of approximately 2,000 prison guards who continued their illegal strike on Monday, barring them from future state employment.
The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) and the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association had reached an agreement to end the 22-day strike over the weekend. The deal, which included overtime and working condition improvements, was largely upheld despite failing to meet the 85% return-to-work threshold.
Hochul emphasized restoring safety within correctional facilities, thanking the National Guard and DOCCS personnel for maintaining order during the strike. More than 6,000 National Guard members will remain deployed in the interim.
On Tuesday, Hochul signed an executive order prohibiting state agencies from hiring any terminated officers. Officials hailed the agreement as a resolution to the unauthorized strike, which the union had not sanctioned.
