A 44-year-old woman from Haiti, Marie Ange Blaise, died last Friday while in custody at the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach, Florida, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The cause of death remains under investigation.

Blaise was first detained on February 12 at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in Saint Croix, where U.S. Customs and Border Protection determined she had not legally entered the U.S.. ICE records show she was transferred multiple times—first to ICE’s staging facility in Puerto Rico, then to Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana, and finally to Florida in April.

ICE has not explained the reason for her multiple transfers. Blaise is the fourth person to die in ICE custody in 2025.

In a statement, ICE said, “All people in ICE custody receive medical, dental and mental health screening and 24-hour emergency care,” and that no detained migrant is denied emergent care.

Civil rights groups have previously raised concerns about healthcare and oversight in ICE detention facilities.
