Washington, DC — U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle asked a political donor to pay $100,000 toward her American Express debt while communicating with him about access to Trump administration officials, according to messages reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal reported that Guilfoyle contacted Kentucky businessman and former congressional candidate Eric Deters in July 2025, shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing. In Signal messages, she allegedly urged Deters to wire money directly to American Express, writing that the payment “won’t show up anywhere.”

Deters had previously discussed paying Guilfoyle as much as $1 million if she successfully helped him obtain assistance with tax and legal matters. The Journal reported that Guilfoyle forwarded Deters messages she sent to senior government officials and updated him on her efforts. Deters ultimately did not make the $100,000 payment.

Guilfoyle’s attorney, Jesse Binnall, disputes the authenticity of the messages and says she has acted properly. Deters said earlier payments to Guilfoyle were connected to patriotic events and appearances.

Democratic lawmakers have asked the State Department to investigate Guilfoyle’s conduct following separate reporting about her activities as ambassador. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to address the newest allegations Wednesday but said Guilfoyle has been a “strong ambassador.”
