Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede expressed interest in closer U.S. cooperation on defense and mining but firmly rejected any notion of selling the territory, following a House Republican bill proposing negotiations for its acquisition.
At a Nuuk briefing, Egede stated, “Greenland’s future is decided by the citizens of Greenland,” emphasizing the territory’s autonomy. While reaffirming Greenland’s openness to trade and mining partnerships with the U.S., Egede rejected military force considerations, noting Vice President-elect JD Vance assured cooperation, not conflict.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also highlighted shared security concerns in the Arctic, signaling willingness for dialogue with the U.S.
Greenland’s strategic location and rich resources have heightened international interest, with climate change further amplifying competition in the Arctic.
