GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO — President Donald Trump has withdrawn his endorsement of Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) following the congressman’s vote against the president’s tariff policy, backing primary challenger Hope Scheppelman instead.

In a Truth Social post Saturday, Trump cited Hurd’s support for a House resolution aimed at terminating tariffs imposed under a national emergency declaration. Hurd joined five other Republicans and Democrats in backing the measure, arguing that Congress holds primary constitutional authority over foreign trade and warning against expanding executive power.

Trump called Hurd a “RINO” and said he was withdrawing support due to what he described as a “lack of support” for tariffs, which he characterized as essential to protecting U.S. industries. He praised Scheppelman, a Navy veteran and former Colorado GOP vice chair, as a stronger advocate for his economic agenda.

Hurd defended his vote on social media, emphasizing separation of powers and stating that institutional consistency matters regardless of which party controls the White House.

The move follows a 6-3 Supreme Court ruling limiting Trump’s emergency tariff authority and comes ahead of the June 30 Republican primary in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District.
