North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) doubled down on his comments referring to the Biden administration as a “dictatorship” during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” When pressed by Kaitlan Collins about his use of the term, Burgum pointed to Biden’s use of executive orders as evidence of bypassing other branches of government.
“Well, I think again, part of where this word has come from has been a nonstop media attack on President Trump,” Burgum said. Collins noted that Trump signed 220 executive orders during his presidency, compared to Biden’s 139 in the same time span.
Collins asked if Burgum was labeling a “democratically elected president a dictator,” to which he replied, “He is bypassing the other two branches of government to push an ideological view.”
A spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee criticized Burgum’s comments, accusing him of supporting Trump’s extreme agenda. “Donald Trump is running on an anti-democracy agenda,” said Alex Floyd.
A Harvard CAPS-Harris poll found that 56% of those surveyed somewhat agree Trump would act like a dictator if reelected. Trump himself has suggested he would act as a dictator, but only on “day one.”
