WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) delivered a sharp rebuke of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, criticizing her leadership on immigration enforcement, disaster funding, and internal oversight.
Tillis told Noem he was giving her a “performance evaluation,” saying “time after time after time, I’ve been disappointed.” The retiring North Carolina senator accused her of detaining U.S. citizens during immigration operations and mishandling investigations into the deaths of Minnesotans Renee Good and Alex Pretti. He argued that mistakes should be acknowledged and called for broader law enforcement review, including potential civil rights probes.
Tillis also questioned FEMA reimbursement delays, saying her policy requiring personal approval for expenditures over $100,000 may be slowing aid to disaster-hit communities in North Carolina. Citing the Homeland Security Act of 2002, he suggested her actions could violate federal law.
He further referenced a letter from the DHS Office of Inspector General alleging limited cooperation under Noem’s leadership and said he would renew his hold on Department of Homeland Security nominees.
In a pointed moment, Tillis criticized Noem’s account in her book of killing a 14-month-old dog, calling it a poor leadership example. Noem responded only once during the exchange.
