KINGSLAND, Georgia — A Georgia judge set a $1 bond for a woman charged with murder after authorities alleged she used medication to induce an illegal abortion, raising legal questions about the case.
Alexia Moore, 31, was arrested earlier this month under a state law banning abortions after embryonic cardiac activity is detected, typically around six weeks of pregnancy. Prosecutors allege she used medication, including misoprostol, to terminate a pregnancy estimated at 22 to 24 weeks.
During a bond hearing, Superior Court Judge Steven Blackerby described the murder charge as “extremely problematic,” suggesting it may be difficult to secure a conviction. He set additional bonds totaling $2,000 for related drug charges. Moore was released after posting bond.
District Attorney Keith Higgins did not oppose the bond and said his office was not consulted before charges were filed. The case will require a grand jury indictment before proceeding to trial.
The case is among the first in Georgia to test the application of abortion restrictions enacted in 2019, with legal experts and advocates closely watching how courts interpret the law.
