Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) sent a letter Thursday to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum urging a feasibility study on adding Donald Trump to Mount Rushmore. Ogles cited Trump’s legislative accomplishments, including the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill,” and his immigration policies as justification.
“The legacy of Mount Rushmore cannot remain frozen in stone,” Ogles wrote on X. He acknowledged concerns about logistics and preservation, but said they shouldn’t preclude honoring what he called “a transformative chapter” in American history.
The National Park Service has previously said the granite surrounding the current sculptures is unsuitable for additional carving. Experts warn new modifications could destabilize the monument, which was completed in 1941.
Mount Rushmore also sits on land sacred to the Lakota Sioux, and many Native American groups oppose any expansions. The Interior Department declined comment but said it reviews all congressional correspondence seriously.
A separate proposal from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) would direct the agency to carve Trump’s likeness, but it hasn’t advanced in Congress.
