Republican South Carolina Rep. RJ May is facing 10 federal charges for distributing child sexual abuse material, prompting bipartisan outrage and potential expulsion. Arrested last week, May allegedly used the screen name “joebidennnn69” on the Kik app to exchange over 220 files involving toddlers and young children in 2024.

Governor Henry McMaster called the allegations “horrific” and emphasized public vigilance. House Speaker Murrell Smith confirmed an ethics complaint was filed and that a two-thirds vote from the full House would be required to expel May.

Federal prosecutors say May used his home Wi-Fi and cellphone to distribute files and traveled to Colombia using a fake identity. DHS agents testified they found videos of him allegedly engaging in sex acts with underage girls.

May’s attorney claims the lawmaker may have been framed, suggesting political enemies accessed his network.

A founding member of the Republican Freedom Caucus, May was expelled from the group following his indictment. He has been suspended from his legislative duties and will remain jailed without bond until trial.
