Washington, DC — Federal agents executed a pre-dawn search warrant Monday at the Washington-area home of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, according to the Justice Department.
Homeland Security Investigations carried out the court-authorized search. Federal officials have released few details about what agents were seeking, and no charges against Omar have been announced.
Reuters, citing Fox News reporting, said the investigation concerns possible immigration fraud involving paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she entered the United States as a child. The Justice Department has not publicly released the warrant affidavit or other evidence supporting that allegation.
A federal search warrant generally requires investigators to establish probable cause before a judge, but the issuance of a warrant does not establish guilt or mean criminal charges will necessarily follow.
The search follows earlier public statements from Trump administration officials indicating Omar was under federal investigation. President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked Omar, a longtime political opponent and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress.
Omar and her attorneys had not publicly responded to the substance of the investigation as of Monday morning.
