New York, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani intensified his criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Sunday, saying video from last week’s shooting of Oscar Belgal looked more like a mass shooting scene than a law-enforcement operation.
Belgal, 28, was shot in the neck during an ICE enforcement action in Marble Hill while his 5-year-old child was inside the vehicle. The child was physically unharmed.
In an interview with MS NOW’s Jacob Soboroff, Mamdani said bystanders appeared unsure whether the plainclothes agents in the footage were law-enforcement officers at all.
“What you can see in that video … it feels like you’re looking at a mass shooter as opposed to seeing someone who is reportedly representing a federal agency,” Mamdani said.
The mayor also accused ICE agents of treating legal restrictions as optional, pointing to New York Police Department rules that generally prohibit officers from firing at people inside vehicles except under limited circumstances.
Mamdani said he spoke with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin after the shooting and again called for ICE operations to end in New York City.
Belgal remained in federal custody Sunday after being discharged from the hospital and transferred through an ICE facility in New Jersey to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
