FBI Director Kash Patel is facing sharp criticism from conservative figures over his handling of the manhunt for the suspect accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk.
Patel initially announced on X that a suspect was in custody, only for Utah authorities to clarify the killer was still at large. Hours later, Patel corrected himself, admitting the individual detained had been released. Even after 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was apprehended, critics accused Patel of missteps and poor communication.
Conservative activist Christopher Rufo wrote that Patel “performed terribly” and questioned whether he had “the operational expertise” to lead the bureau. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon argued on his podcast that Robinson’s arrest owed more to the suspect’s family turning him in than to FBI work.
Patel reportedly expressed frustration to subordinates over delays in receiving key information, including suspect photos. According to a lawsuit filed this week, internal dissent within the FBI has also grown, alleging Patel forced out experienced staff for insufficient political loyalty.
Despite the criticism, Patel offered an emotional tribute to Kirk: “Rest now, brother. We have the watch, and I’ll see you in Valhalla.” The FBI said it continues to work with Utah authorities to bring Robinson to justice. Patel is expected to face questioning from Congress next week.
