A recent expert survey on presidential greatness ranked President Joe Biden as the 14th-best president in American history, with his potential 2024 opponent, former President Donald Trump, positioned at the end of the list. The survey, conducted between November 15 and December 31, polled members of the Presidents and Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association, the leading group of social science experts in presidential politics, as part of the 2024 Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey.

Abraham Lincoln was named the greatest president according to the survey. Biden was ranked higher than Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan, and Ulysses S. Grant, while former President Barack Obama secured the 7th position, an eight-spot improvement from the previous year’s poll.

Trump was placed in the 45th spot, ranking lower than James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, and William Henry Harrison. The survey also explored partisan and ideological biases among the experts but concluded that these differences did not significantly impact the overall results. Nonetheless, a clear partisan divide was evident in the rankings of Obama and Biden, with Democrats ranking them on average at 6th and 13th places, respectively, and Republicans placing them at 15th and 30th.
