Miami, FL — A man was arrested after authorities say he impersonated an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent and intimidated voters at a Miami polling location during Brazil’s presidential election.
Danilo Alves Silva, 46, allegedly arrived Sunday at Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus wearing an ICE-branded jacket and hat, tactical-style boots, sunglasses and a face covering. Brazilian nationals were using the campus as an overseas polling location.
According to the arrest report, voters appeared frightened that an actual federal immigration agent was monitoring the election and could potentially detain or deport people.
Sheriff’s deputies intervened after Silva became involved in an argument. Investigators said he admitted he was not an ICE agent and could not provide law-enforcement identification. Silva allegedly said he purchased the clothing online and wore it to the polling location to “see people’s reactions.”
Authorities charged Silva with voter intimidation or suppression, unlawful use of police insignia, threatening a public servant and conspiracy to commit bribery. Police allege that after his arrest, Silva offered to get an officer “paid” if he were released.
Miami-Dade elections officials subsequently emphasized that ICE agents will not be stationed inside county polling places and urged voters not to let fear or misinformation prevent them from participating.
