COPENHAGEN — Denmark developed contingency plans to destroy key runways in Greenland in the event of a potential U.S. military invasion, according to multiple reports citing Danish broadcaster DR.

The plans, drafted in January, reportedly included deploying troops with explosives to disable runways in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq to prevent U.S. aircraft from landing. Danish forces also transported medical supplies, including blood reserves, in preparation for a possible conflict scenario.

The preparations were driven by rising tensions following statements from President Donald Trump about acquiring Greenland, as well as broader geopolitical concerns. Danish and European officials viewed the situation as a serious security risk, prompting coordination with allies including France and Germany.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the period as one of the most serious foreign policy challenges since World War II. Despite the preparations, officials emphasized the measures were precautionary and intended to deter escalation rather than provoke conflict.

The situation has since de-escalated through diplomatic engagement, though officials remain cautious about future tensions surrounding Greenland’s strategic importance.
