Donald Trump’s second-term agenda is facing an early electoral test as Democrats pour millions into two special elections in Florida, hoping to flip Republican-held House seats in the 1st and 6th Congressional Districts. Though both districts strongly favored Trump in 2024, Democratic candidates have significantly out-fundraised their GOP rivals.

In Florida’s 6th District, Democrat Josh Weil raised $9 million—nearly 10 times the haul of Trump-endorsed state Sen. Randy Fine, who has since contributed $600,000 of his own money and received over $2 million in outside support. The seat was vacated by Mike Waltz, who joined the Trump administration as a national security adviser.

In the 1st District, Democrat Gay Valimont faces Republican Jimmy Patronis, Florida’s chief financial officer. Both contests are scheduled for April 1.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the races show growing public dissatisfaction with the Trump administration’s sweeping federal overhaul. Republican officials, including Trump and Rep. Richard Hudson, are trying to rally support to prevent a political setback.

Even allies of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are urging support for Fine despite past political feuds. While Democrats remain underdogs, observers note the surge in national attention and funding as a symbolic win.
