Washington, D.C. — Democratic voters heading into the November midterms are more motivated by stopping President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans than by advancing their own party’s policies, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll.
The survey found 54% of Democratic voters said their main reason for supporting Democratic congressional candidates was to prevent Trump and Republicans from enacting their agenda. Another 46% said they were voting primarily to help Democrats pass their own policies.
Republican voters showed the opposite pattern. Fifty-seven percent said they were voting to help Trump and GOP lawmakers advance their policies, while 43% said their main goal was stopping Democrats.
Across all registered voters, 45% said their congressional vote would be cast in opposition to Trump, compared with 28% who said they were voting in support of him. Another 27% said Trump was not a factor in their vote. The poll also found Trump’s job approval at 39%, with 61% disapproving.
Voters were divided over whether Democratic policies would improve their finances, with 36% saying they would be better off and 36% saying they would be worse off. Views were similarly split on whether Democratic policies would protect or threaten respondents’ culture and way of life.
The CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted Sept. 8-11 among 2,460 U.S. adults. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.
