Cary, North Carolina — A new generation of cancer vaccines is showing encouraging results in clinical trials, but researchers worry growing vaccine hesitancy could limit their impact if the treatments eventually reach patients.

One example comes from the Cleveland Clinic, where an experimental vaccine targeting triple-negative breast cancer produced an immune response in 74% of 35 participants in a Phase 1 trial. Researchers stressed that the study established safety and immune response, not whether the vaccine actually prevents cancer recurrence. A Phase 2 trial is expected to investigate that question.

Meanwhile, Moderna and Merck recently reported that their personalized mRNA vaccine, combined with pembrolizumab, reduced melanoma recurrence in a Phase 3 trial involving roughly 1,100 patients. Researchers say longer follow-up is still needed to determine its effect on overall survival.

The progress comes as doctors report persistent misinformation surrounding vaccines, including the unsupported claim that mRNA vaccines cause so-called “turbo cancer.” Public-health researchers worry those narratives could spill over into attitudes toward cancer vaccines.

The HPV vaccine provides an existing example of vaccination preventing cancers. CDC monitoring has found HPV vaccines safe and highly effective at preventing infections and precancers caused by high-risk strains, yet vaccination rates vary substantially across states.

Researchers say cancer vaccines remain an evolving field, but declining public confidence could become another hurdle if promising experimental treatments eventually receive approval.
