Former FBI Director James Comey was interviewed by Secret Service agents in Washington, D.C., on Friday after a social media post sparked controversy and allegations it was a coded threat against President Donald Trump.

Comey posted a photo of seashells arranged to spell “8647” — a combination some interpreted as referencing Trump (the 47th president) and the slang term “86.” According to Merriam-Webster, “86” typically means to “get rid of” or “reject,” not “kill,” though some misinterpret it as violent slang.

Comey later deleted the post, saying he intended it as a political message and was unaware of the violent interpretation. “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence,” he wrote. “I oppose violence of any kind.”

Despite the clarification, Trump claimed on Fox News that Comey “knew exactly what that meant,” calling it a call for “assassination.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed that sentiment, calling the post a threat. DHS and the Secret Service confirmed an active investigation, though Comey voluntarily met with agents and has not been charged with any crime.
