Columbia University interim president Katrina Armstrong is stepping down, just a week after the school agreed to Trump administration demands to restore $400 million in federal funding. Armstrong will return to her prior role leading Columbia’s Irving Medical Center.

The administration had previously canceled grants and contracts with Columbia, citing its alleged failure to curb antisemitic harassment on campus. In response, Columbia implemented new policies, including:

  • Banning face masks on campus
  • Empowering security officers to remove or arrest individuals
  • Restructuring oversight of the Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African studies departments, as well as the Center for Palestine Studies

Armstrong had served as interim president following the resignation of Minouche Shafik, who stepped down after criticism over her response to campus protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Columbia’s Board of Trustees named Co-Chair Claire Shipman as acting president until a permanent successor is chosen.
