China warned Monday it will retaliate against any nation that strikes trade deals with the United States that undermine Beijing’s interests, as tensions grow over President Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy.
In a statement reported by Reuters, China’s Ministry of Commerce vowed to take “resolute and reciprocal” countermeasures if its economic position is threatened. The warning follows Trump’s imposition of sweeping tariffs on Chinese goods, raising duties to 145% since his April 2 “Liberation Day” declaration.
While the Trump administration paused tariffs on many U.S. partners, China remains a key target. Although exemptions have been granted to companies like Apple, whose supply chains depend on China, Beijing accused the U.S. of initiating a unilateral trade war.
China and the U.S. have failed to reach new bilateral agreements, and both sides remain entrenched. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration is negotiating with up to 75 countries to implement reciprocal trade agreements.
Trump declared China’s past trade practices “no longer sustainable,” while China’s foreign ministry pledged to resist U.S. tariffs “to the end.”
