The Biden administration plans to expedite the remaining $6 billion in Ukraine security aid before Inauguration Day, expecting that President-elect Donald Trump will cut support upon taking office. While sending the aid quickly is challenging due to logistical delays, officials aim to use the funds from April’s $61 billion package to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. However, only existing U.S. military equipment can be sent immediately, as newly produced supplies take months to manufacture and deliver.

During Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s visit, Biden instructed the Pentagon to allocate remaining military aid funds, including production contracts, by the end of his term. Trump has consistently criticized U.S. spending on Ukraine and is likely to scale back aid, putting pressure on European allies to increase their contributions.

In contrast, Senate Republicans support ongoing aid, with Sen. Roger Wicker urging Biden to expedite shipments before Trump’s term begins. Meanwhile, international allies have redirected $48 billion from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, but Trump’s potential policies could alter future aid commitments.
