On Thursday, President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign urged top Republicans to withdraw their lawsuits aimed at limiting mail balloting, now that Donald Trump has started endorsing the method. Trump, who previously claimed without evidence that mail voting was fraudulent, recently launched a campaign to promote mail voting among his supporters. Despite this shift, the Republican National Committee (RNC), under Trump’s influence, continues to pursue legal actions against mail voting practices in several states.

Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, called on Trump to demand the RNC and his allies cease these lawsuits if he genuinely supports mail voting. Republicans argue there is no contradiction, asserting they support secure mail voting. The RNC contends that Nevada’s policy of counting late-arriving mail ballots invites fraud, a claim they also made in lawsuits in Mississippi, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Trump’s baseless claims about mail ballot fraud were central to his false assertions that the 2020 election was stolen, contributing to the January 6 Capitol attack. His attacks have led to new mail voting restrictions in several states, and although he now promotes mail voting, Trump still falsely claims it cost him the 2020 election.
