Washington, DC — President Donald Trump reportedly wanted former Fox News host Maria Bartiromo to become White House press secretary before Katie Zacharia took the job for a brief and turbulent five-day tenure.

Axios reported, citing two administration sources, that Trump was interested in Bartiromo after Karoline Leavitt stepped down. Bartiromo reportedly signaled she was not interested in taking the position. CNN commentator Scott Jennings was also said to have been under consideration but was never formally offered the job.

Bartiromo left Fox News in September after more than 12 years with the network. Her departure came amid reports that she had shared confidential internal guidance about Fox’s Trump coverage with the White House. Bartiromo has long been an outspoken supporter of Trump.

Zacharia ultimately began as press secretary on Oct. 12 but was out of the role by Oct. 16. Her sole formal briefing lasted about 14 minutes and drew criticism, while questions about her legal background intensified after she acknowledged failing the California bar exam.

Trump said Friday that he had encouraged Zacharia to “reconsider” the position and later suggested she could remain in the administration in another capacity.

The White House has not announced a permanent replacement, and Trump said he is in “no rush” to make another appointment.
