Richmond, Virginia — Virginia Democrats are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to revive a congressional map that could give the party four additional winnable House seats in this year’s elections.

The emergency appeal follows a 4-3 Virginia Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the map, finding that lawmakers improperly began the ballot process after early voting had already started. Democrats argue the voter-approved map should stand and say the state court ruling disrupts federal elections too close to key deadlines.

Reuters reported that the blocked map was part of a broader national redistricting fight, with both parties seeking advantages outside the usual once-a-decade process. Republicans have pushed new maps in several states, while Democrats have looked for countermeasures in states where they control parts of the process.

Virginia Democrats say the map would help offset Republican gains elsewhere and better reflect voter preferences. Republicans argue the plan was an improper partisan gerrymander and that state procedures were not followed.

Legal experts told AP the appeal faces difficult odds because the U.S. Supreme Court usually avoids overturning state courts on state constitutional questions. Virginia election officials also warned that map deadlines are approaching quickly, leaving little room for changes before candidate and primary schedules are affected.
