Palm Beach, Florida — United Airlines denied that it is offering free flight changes to passengers who object to Palm Beach International Airport being renamed after President Donald Trump.
The Hill reported that a leaked internal memo told reservation agents they could offer alternate airports, including Fort Lauderdale or Miami, to customers who objected to flying through President Donald Trump International Airport. United later said the memo was “poorly written” and did not reflect official policy.
The airport was renamed after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation authorizing the change earlier this year. The new name took effect July 9 for the airport near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. The airport code is also expected to transition from PBI to DJT for new flight bookings in August.
United said agents may help customers look for alternate airports when possible, but the airline’s policy does not allow free changes solely because of an airport name or code. Passengers who want to switch flights would still need to follow standard fare and change rules.
The viral memo drew attention online before United clarified its policy.
