Washington, D.C. — Sen. Ed Markey called for President Donald Trump to be impeached after Trump used a primetime address to claim the 2020 election was stolen and warn that similar forces could threaten the 2026 midterms.
Markey said Trump was undermining free and fair elections and urged Congress to remove him from office. The Massachusetts Democrat also said that if Trump sends ICE agents to polling places, opponents should respond with protests, sit-ins, labor actions, and civil disobedience.
Trump’s speech cited declassified documents that he said showed China acquired 220 million U.S. voter files and that intelligence officials suppressed information about foreign election interference. Critics noted that voter data is often publicly available or sold by states and said Trump did not prove that votes were changed or that the 2020 result was altered.
The Hill reported that Trump used phrases such as “rigged and stolen,” “corrupt,” and “cover-up,” reviving claims that have divided Republicans and alarmed Democrats ahead of the midterms.
Markey previously called for Trump’s removal after the president threatened Iran during a dispute over the Strait of Hormuz.
