New York City, New York — President Donald Trump has told Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer that frozen federal funding for major New York City infrastructure projects could be released if Schumer supports renaming prominent transportation hubs after him, according to reporting published Thursday.

The proposal, first reported by Punchbowl News, involves renaming Dulles International Airport and Penn Station in Trump’s honor. The request follows Trump’s October decision to halt roughly $18 billion in federal funding for a major New York City subway expansion and a new rail tunnel linking the city with New Jersey. The freeze was announced during a 43-day government shutdown in which Schumer played a central negotiating role.

A spokesperson for Schumer did not respond to requests for comment. There has been no public indication that the Senate Democrat is considering the proposal.

Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly pushed to attach his name to public institutions and federal initiatives. Past efforts include renaming the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute for Peace, moves that legal experts have questioned. Trump has also promoted “Trump Accounts,” tax-advantaged investment vehicles for young people, and launched a government-backed prescription drug website branded TrumpRX.com.

In addition, Trump has reportedly explored plans to construct a 250-foot monument near Washington, D.C., that would rival existing national memorials.
