President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he will deploy U.S. troops to San Francisco as part of his administration’s ongoing effort to curb crime in major cities. The move marks the latest in a series of controversial deployments to urban centers that Trump says have been “destroyed by woke policies.”
Speaking on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures, Trump said he was “so proud” of recent actions in Washington, D.C., claiming that 1,700 “career criminals” had been removed from the city. He said similar operations are underway to bring National Guard forces into Chicago, despite opposition from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
“San Francisco was truly one of the great cities of the world, and then 15 years ago, it went wrong. It went woke,” Trump said. “But we’re going to go to San Francisco, and we’re going to make it great again.”
Trump added that he could invoke the Insurrection Act if governors continue to resist his deployment orders, calling it an “unquestioned power” used by “half of previous presidents.” He argued that Democratic-led cities have become “disasters” under current leadership.
The administration also petitioned the Supreme Court on Friday to lift a lower court ruling blocking National Guard deployment to Chicago. The appeal followed Pritzker’s warning that using the Insurrection Act would be unconstitutional without an actual rebellion.
