Keystone, South Dakota — President Donald Trump used a July Fourth weekend speech at Mount Rushmore to warn of what he called a rising “communist menace” in the United States, despite no evidence that communism has meaningful political power in America.

Speaking at the start of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, Trump framed the 2026 midterms as an ideological fight between patriotism and communism. Reuters reported that Trump tied his remarks to progressive Democrats, democratic socialists, and some immigrants, telling the crowd, “You can be a communist, or you can be a patriot. You cannot be both.”

The speech came as Republicans have increasingly used “communist” as a broad attack on left-wing candidates and policies. Democratic socialists have won some high-profile local and primary races, but they do not control either major party, Congress, or the U.S. economy. The United States remains a capitalist country with private property, private enterprise, and market-based institutions.

Reuters noted that the speech also came as polling showed 61% of Americans believe the country falls short of its ideals. Rather than focus only on national unity, Trump used the event to rally supporters and push voting changes ahead of the midterms.
