Austin, TX — Three people were killed and at least 14 others injured early Sunday in a mass shooting on West Sixth Street, a popular nightlife district in downtown Austin, according to local authorities.
Austin Police responded around 1:59 a.m. to reports of a man firing a weapon near Buford’s Bar. Police Chief Lisa Davis said officers confronted the suspect and exchanged gunfire. Three officers returned fire, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
Austin-Travis County EMS transported 14 victims to area hospitals. Officials said three of those injured were in critical condition as of the latest update. Emergency responders were able to arrive quickly due to routine public safety staging in the area, with medics on scene within 57 seconds of the initial call.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the rapid response by law enforcement and medical personnel, stating that their swift action likely prevented additional casualties.
Federal partners assisted at the scene as investigators worked to determine the motive behind the shooting. Authorities urged anyone seeking information about loved ones to contact the Austin Police Department’s Victim Services Unit.
