TEXAS — Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) is facing mounting pressure from within his own party after screenshots surfaced showing alleged late-night explicit text messages to a former staffer who later died by self-immolation, according to reporting by the Washington Examiner.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) called on Gonzales to “resign immediately,” accusing him of abusing his position of power. The messages reportedly show Gonzales pressing Regina Santos-Aviles for explicit photos and sexual details while she pushed back, at one point telling him the conversation was “going too far” and questioning whether he was sober.
Not all Republicans have called for resignation. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) urged Gonzales to drop out of the 2026 race, while Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) said members of Congress should condemn any request for explicit photos from staff. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) described the allegations as “very serious” but said it was too early to prejudge the matter.
Gonzales narrowly won his last primary runoff by roughly 400 votes and now faces renewed opposition from gun rights activist Brandon Herrera. A resignation would affect the GOP’s slim House majority as the issue could move to a House Ethics Committee review.
